Signing off

Thank you so much for following the Richmond 101 blog for the Richmond Times-Dispatch!

This will be my final post as I am leaving my position at the RTD to be an interactive producer for the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. This Wednesday is last day with the paper.

Although posts on this blog have been few and far between due to other projects I’ve been involved with – like the site redesign, all things social media, etc. – I’ve really enjoyed getting to know and explore Richmond. This city is truly a wonderful place to be with all of the festivals, history and great dining scene! I will truly miss Richmond and my wonderful coworkers at the Times-Dispatch. Who knows? Maybe the next web producer will revive the blog and make it in to something great.

If you’d like to keep up with my adventures in Atlanta, you can follow me on Twitter @MelroseGibson.

Happy Pi Day!

As you may or may not know, today is Pi Day. Of course, this is geeky 3.14 pi and not sweet pie day. However, when one of my coworkers felt the need to bring in a lemon meringue pie from Church Hill’s Proper Pie Co. for our weekly staff meeting, I was not about to refuse.

Proper Pie Co. is a recent addition to Richmond’s historic Church Hill – it just opened last fall – but it already has a reputation for delicious savory and sweet pies. I’ve heard nothing but rave reviews about the bakery, but I hadn’t checked it out because there aren’t any gluten-free options.Continue Reading [→]

Mac’s Smacks brings all-natural, local small batch balms to Richmond

Last Friday night, I went to the launch party for Mac’s Smacks, a local company that makes small batch balms, at Balliceaux in the Fan. My boyfriend and I hadn’t been to the restaurant before and I love lip stuff. In fact, I hoard it. There are six tubes of lip balm or lipstick currently in my purse.

However, the one I’ll be reaching for the most is the Mac’s Smack’s Mint Wish lip balm that I got as a door prize at the launch party. It’s all natural, gluten-free, paraben-free, petroleum-free and cruelty free and it comes in a recycled plastic tube. Basically, it’s free of bad stuff, it’s good for the environment and it feels awesome on your lips. I’m happy that I got the tube for free, but I would gladly pay $6 for another tube. I’m also looking forward to any tinted balm or lip gloss.Continue Reading [→]

Taste Test: 525 at the Berry Burk vs. Pasture

Now that I’ve been working in downtown Richmond for a few months, I’ve had a chance to eat at a lot of the restaurants near the Times-Dispatch building. Two of my favorite places to get lunch are 525 at the Berry Burk and Pasture – I have a lot of love for those restaurants on Grace Street. I also have a lot of love the homemade potato chips and onion dip at both places. Today, I made it my mission to figure out who had the best chips and dip. And being as the Digital Growth and Innovation team had a staff meeting, I knew I could rely on my team to help me out with the project.Continue Reading [→]

Will you watch “The Following” on Fox?

“The Following,” starring Kevin Bacon, will premiere on Fox tonight.

Set in Richmond, the show is about a former FBI agent (Bacon) who is tracking down a serial killer (James Purefoy), who seems to be obsessed with Edgar Allen Poe’s work and has a following of serial killers that he has been training and recruiting while in prison.Continue Reading [→]

Check out the snow we’ve been freaking out about…

I’m a fan of snow in Richmond – I didn’t even need to scrape off my windshield this morning!

It’s snowing!

It’s been a crazy week in RVA so far…

I’ve learned a lot about Richmond this week.

  1.  Richmonders love their trees. They really love them.
  2. Richmonders will flip out over the chance of snow and we get to blog about it.
  3. Richmonders will go nuts over a certain delegate bringing a rifle in to the Capitol.Continue Reading [→]

Looking for a new lunch spot downtown? Check out Rappahannock!

Getting to Rappahannock, the new oyster bar downtown, is really easy from the Times-Dispatch – it’s just right across the street. And once you walk out in to the courtyard on the backside of the building, you will smell the restaurant and you will want to go it. Trust me – the food tastes as good as it smells.Continue Reading [→]

Forest Hill Park

As part of my effort to stay active and get to know new parts of town, I went for a run in Forest Hill Park over the weekend. Even on Saturday morning when it was gloomy and cold, the park was beautiful. I definitely recommend going for a run in this park. There were paved and unpaved trails – just watch out for the occasional loose dog when you’re on your run!
